How to: write rcov test

'rcov' is a ruby test coverage tool which tells you how effective is the test by giving you the complete coverage of the test that you have written.

You can use it in any of your projects and check your test effectiveness.

First install the gem

$gem install rcov

Next generate the rcov documents like below

$rcov -I lib spec/*.rb --exclude ^spec,/gems/ -T --no-html

The above parameters tell rcov to include lib directory as well as all files inside spec dir and exclude all the gems.
Also, it displays the output in terminal and doesn't generate the html file. You can take the --no-html flag off if you like an interactive html view which is inside the coverage folder.

You can achieve the same with rake task also like below:

Include the 'rcov_custom' file in the rake file.

# In Rake
require File.expand_path(File.dirname(__FILE__) + '/lib/tasks/rcov_custom')

Next you write the following in the file.
# rcov_test.rb
desc "Custom rcov"
RSpec::Core::RakeTask.new(:rcov_custom) do |t|
t.rcov = true
t.rcov_opts = %w{--exclude gems\/,spec\/ -T}
end

In terminal, check the rake tasks.

$Rake -T

You should see a custom rake task named 'Custom rcov'.
Finally, generate the rcov test whenever you feel like with the rake command.

$rake rcov_custom

mySysGit and Pik -- Git and RVM for Windows

1) mySysGit - Git for Windows:

Git is almost inseparable from Rails as they both go hand in hand. The Rails development process suddenly becomes professional, managed and easy with Git. To get it working on windows, we need a windows version of Git i.e. mySysGit.

Watch the video below on installing and using Git On Windows from gitcasts.com then just download and install mySysGit from http://code.google.com/p/msysgit/downloads/list.

2) Pik – RVM for Windows:

If you would like to manage multiple versions of ruby on windows, just download the latest pik-0.2.8.msi from http://github.com/vertiginous/pik/downloads and install it.

Pik is an excellent windows tool by Gordon Thiesfeld in the place of Ruby Version Manager (RVM). You can find more about pik on Github at http://github.com/vertiginous/pik and try installing ree and ruby 1.8.7 along with 1.9.2 with ‘pik add’ command.

 >pik add C:\ruby\IronRuby-091\bin
 Adding:  091: IronRuby 0.9.1.0 on .NET 2.0.0.0

If pik is not working, you may need to add path to your installed directory in Windows enviroment by following this guide. Assuming, the directory C:\bin is in my path:

Cut & Paste in Mac OS X

As recently, I started working with Mac and at once realized that a simple functionality was missing in the Snow Leopard OS X Finder, and that’s Cut & Paste. With googling I found this app, moveAddict which solves this basic problem for free. This means you no longer have the hassle to arrange the two windows and drag n’ drop the item to accomplish the feat.

moveAddict provides a systemwide menu, Finder-window toolbar buttons, and customizable keyboard shortcuts for cutting and pasting files—along with a few useful extras.

Ruby on Rails on Windows

So, you guys wanna kick start Ruby on Rails (ROR) on Windows as you can’t afford a Mac or you can’t get to work with *nix platform. Then this step by step guide just for you and what a better day to start as with the grand launch of Rails 3.

Well, there’re two popular ways to install ROR on a PC with Windows OS, one is a normal installation with exe setup files and another(recommended) is through cygwin in a *nix environment under windows. I will discuss the latter one in next post.

Steps:

1) Download Ruby Installer (1.9.2 or 1.8.7) and run through the wizard with all the defaults to install Ruby. If you don’t have a preferred IDE or editor, windows ruby comes with scite, which is pretty cool.

2) Next, we’ll need to install some gems (standard Ruby package manager or ruby plugin libraries). So just download the RubyGems zip file, extract, then run “ruby setup.rb” in your newly installed Ruby prompt or just double click the setup.rb file. If your RubyGems system is old, update it by running (in cmd or Ruby CLI)

gem update —system

3) We will be using SQLite instead of mySQL to minimize pain. Download the pre-compiled version of sqlite-3_7_2 (install) from the SQLite web site and sqlitedll-3_7_2.zip, unzip it and copy sqlite3.dll and sqlite3.def to your ruby/bin directory (or copy to c:\Windows\System32).

4) Now that SQLite3 is installed, just install the gem:

gem install sqlite3-ruby

5) Install all of latest Rails (gem) and its dependencies through the command line:

gem install rails –pre

6) Test ROR by Creating your application skeleton and start the server:

rails new path/to/your/new/application

cd path/to/your/new/application

rails server

You're running Ruby on Rails! Follow the instructions on http://localhost:3000.

Click about your application’s environment to see the details. If you see the above screen, you’re successfully running ROR. Cheers.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup will be the 19th FIFA World Cup, the premier international football tournament. It is scheduled to take place between 11 June and 11 July 2010 in South Africa. The 2010 FIFA World Cup will be the culmination of a qualification process that began in August 2007 and involved 204 of the 208 FIFA national teams. As such, it matches the 2008 Summer Olympics as the sports event with the most competing nations.

This will be the first time that the tournament has been hosted by an African nation, after South Africa beat Morocco and Egypt in an all-African bidding process. This decision left the Oceania Football Confederation as the only confederation yet to host the FIFA World Cup. Italy are the defending champions. The draw for the finals took place on 4 December 2009 in Cape Town.

This is the first World Cup that does not include any teams that are qualifying for the first time, although two of the qualifiers (Slovakia and Serbia) have previously appeared only as parts of former competing nations. Slovakia was previously part of Czechoslovakia, and Serbia has competed as part of Yugoslavia and Serbia and Montenegro. In both cases FIFA considers these teams to have retained the earlier nations’ records.

Embed full Internet Explorer functionality in non-IE browsers

So, Microsoft uses ActiveX and Silverlight in its websites and browser. That means Microsoft is making silverlight a competitor for adobe flash plugins by using it in all its websites (udates and like). So, what if Internet Explorer is not the browser of your choice and you have to browse activex enabled pages. Then, here's the solution.

Once you've loaded up firefox go to the address bar and type or copy and paste:

about:config

Right click and select: New -> Integer

Name the integer or copy paste:

nglayout.initialpaint.delay

Change the integers value to:

300

You can also use 0 (zero) as an Integer Value, if you don't like the performance of the 300 Integer Value.

1. Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere in the "aboug:config" page and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

4. Restart Firefox

If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages 2-3 times faster now.

increase virtual memory

Our friend Ashim had a little problem with his computer as he was constantly having virtual memory too low popups. This happens if the available memory cannot keep up with the resources demands, i.e. if you run a no. of programs in a less powerful machine with low ram. He has a mobo like this

Processor: P4 2.26Ghz
HDD: 80 Gb
RAM: 256 Mb
Motherboard: x845

So, he has a low config. mobo and his comp. naturally freezes and gets stuck throughout the way.

To solve this problem we can use the HDD space a RAM storage area for storing processed memory. As HDD is much more faster and has loads of space, this is a convenient way.

For increasing virtual memory, goto Desktop and right click on "My Computer" and select "Properties".
This opens the "System Properties" window, now select the "Advance" tab and select "Performance" -> "Settings". Again in "Performance" window select "Advance" tab and in "Virtual Memory" column, click on "Change".
Usually the paging is set to "system managed" which means the system manages everything itself but since you are having problems select "custom size" and set initial size double your RAM i.e. 512 in this case since there's only 256 Mb RAM and maximum size as quadruple i.e 1024.
Select set->OK->OK.

So, generally, set virtual memory double the size of ram and you are done.

Alternatively, you can use you pen drive as RAM to increase virtual memory. A program called "eBoostr". It's a great tool but in free version you can use it simultaneously for 4 hours only. Also, it doesn't state but using pendrive as RAM decrease the life span of your pendrive.

Does your browser automatically opens www.thenewspedia.com ?

This is probably a virus or worm which doesn't harm your computer system but only opens the link i.e. www.thenewspedia.com uncondinationably. Actually this is a browser hijacker effecting IE (Internet Explorer) and Firefox. It simply promotes thenewspedia by opening up the site randomly while you are browsing or opens up along with homepage even if you have no set it as your homepage.

As a browser hijacker, it takes controll over your browser so you should immediately remove it as to avoid future harms. So here's the removal steps:

REMOVAL

This is caused by a file named nissan.exe and here I have described 3 methods to remove it.

METHOD I:

Open registry editor by going to Start->run->regedit and hit enter.

Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

you will see an entry named "taskman" with a value similar to "C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-3028898713-081331...

Double click it and you'll see its path like C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-3028898713-0813311981-684376638-1852\nissan.exe

This file is the cause of the mess as it tells windows to execute the file. So, you have to delete the key "taskman" but before that copy your path address (C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-3028898713-0813311...\) except nissan.exe and navigate to the folder by pasting it in run. Now delete the key.

When you open the folder recycler folder nothing will be shown. This is because it is set to super hidden state. Use "attrib -h -s -r" command in run like start->run->[attrib -h -s -r C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-3028898713-0813311981-684376638-1852\nissan.exe] to remove any attribute and then delete it.

Or alternatively, you can use "unlocker" to delete the folder. This is a free and handy utility to move or kill or delete files when locked by other windows services.

HOW TO SETUP ADSL ROUTER

This question is asked to me many times, so here is the answer to configure adsl router regarding NTC's ISP. As xDSL service providers don't send door to door personnel as other cable/wireless ISPs, the user has to be self aware and here I have written every thing you need to know about ADSL making you a Guru in no time.

First thing you need to do is buy an adsl router which you can easily get in any hardware shop, preferably digicom, tplink, dlink, billion, planet, etc. It usually comes with a "splitter" whose task is very important. If you plan on using it alone then buy a single port router else if you want to share it with nearby friends then buy multiport router and few meters of cat-5 cables to expand the lan. Though multiport router costs little more but better buy this as may come handy in future. Also if you have laptop or iPhone then better buy wireless router.

Installation Procedures

Disconnect your telephone line from distribution point inside your house
Connect it to the input of splitter
Connect DSL modem in the splitter interface marked 'modem' with R-J11 connecter
Connect your telephone set in the splitter interface marked 'phone'
The computers are connected with RJ 45 or USB interface to connect to the DSL Modem.
Then create the PPPoE Dial Up connection.
Because ADSL can be used for broadband access and involves a wide range of multimedia services, you are recommended use a computer with such configurations :
- Shall be equipped with the 10M/100M Ethernet adapter or USB 1.1. or higher interface
- Shall support the TCP/IP protocol.
- CPU above Pentium III, 128 M memory, 10 G hard disk, graphic accelerating adapter with above 2 M displays memory, audio adapter and sound box.
- Operating systems can be Windows 98SE, Windows Me, Windows 2000 or Windows XP. For system configuration in the WEB interface, the browser of Internet Explorer V 6.0 or later.
If you need extensions, connect it after splitter only. (Important!)

So, basically you have to split your main PSTN line into two via splitter using one outlet for router and one for normal phone line use as shown in above figure.

Now bring your phone set and check if both outlets from splitter give dial tone or not. If not then maintain the phone line and recheck the connection.

Attention (Very Important):
Check if your ADSL line is working, the ADSL led will first blink and then glow continuously after you connect your Modem/CPE to the phone line.

If not then either there is no dial tone or your adsl service hasn't been started.

If there is no response showing (no continuous glow) in the ADSL Led of your Modem/CPE, Please contact the corresponding NT MDF (local exchange) to query if there is any problem in your ADSL line.

ADSL Modem (CPE) Configuration

After Purchasing CPE (ADSL 2+ modem), Client are requested go through its manual thoroughly.

Browse the web management page of your ADSL modem. For example if your modem management interface IP Address is 192.168.1.1

Enter http://192.168.1.1/ in your web browser.

Provide admin username and password of your modem.

Normal Router IP's are 192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.10, 192.168.1.54, 192.168.1.100, 192.168.0.1, etc.
Normal username and password are :

username: admin
password: admin
or
username: admin
password: password

(Note: customers are exteremly encouraged to go through their Modem/CPE manual to get information like IP address, Admin username and Password).

If you are using modem management interface for the first time then you may be shown quick setup wizard for configuring xdsl.Generally, Modem/CPE can be used in Routing Mode or Bridge Mode.

1. Routing Mode
In this mode, modem/cpe dials with username and password provided by NT. You have to explicitly provide username and password to your modem configuration. In this mode same Modem/CPE can be used to share internet connection to multiple computers.

So in this mode, when you turn on the router, you are automatically connected to the internet whether the computer is on/off. Use this mode if you are sharing the net. Note here username and password refers to adsl234 (not admin as previous) provided by NT.

Configuration Parameters for Routing Mode

VPI --- 8
VCI --- 81
encapsulation --- PPPOE/LLC
Authentication --- Auto

Username --- Provided by NT (eg. adsl1234)
Password --- Provided by NT (eg. adsl1234)
Providing these information should establish connection between CPE and DSLAM

After this you need to save/restart the router. Usually there's the option to save and reboot in the modem web interface (search it) and the restart takes about two minutes.

Note : One does not need to create a dial up or dail while using routing mode. Modem will dial itself. In authentication mode, previously NT used CHAP mode but now they have switched to PAP mode. So, you can provide PAP instead of auto also.

2. Bridge Mode

In this mode your computer dials with username and password provided by NT. This mode is mainly used to connect internet for a single computer.

Configuration Parameters for Bridge Mode

Select Bridge Mode

VPI --- 8
VCI --- 81
Authentication --- Auto

After this you need to save/restart the router. Usually there's the option to save and reboot in the modem web interface (search it) and the restart takes about two minutes.

This is like traditional 56-k dial-up also called Dial-On-Demand. For this you need to create a Dial-up Connection for ADSL(Broadband) as below:

Configuration For XP

Go to network connection wizard window

Choose Make Internet dialup connection

Choose manual option

Choose xdsl PPPoe service

Provide service name

Username - provided by NT (eg. adsl1234)

Password - provided by NT (eg. adsl1234)

For convenience place a shortcut of this connection in desktop (right click on dial-up and send to desktop). Now dial with the account created

Troubleshooting:

So, your internet is not working. See if the tips below help:

1. Internet Protocol properties:

Go to start-> My Network Places, click view Network connections, right click local area connection and select properties. Set Obtain IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically option in Internet protocol properties of LAN connection

Sometimes when you set your TCP/IP Properties to automatic, the ethernet card (lan card) of your computer has problems communicating with your router and it cannot assign the ip address and you see a pop-up like limited or no connection. In this case click the ballon and go to support and click on repair. This automatically refreshes the ip and corrects the problem.

If the problem presists then assign the ip address manually. Go to start-> My Network Places, click view Network connections, right click local area connection and select properties. In Internet protocol properties of LAN connection, set Use the following IP address option and enter the following:

In default gateway and preferred DNS server set your router IP address and leave alternate DNS server blank. Click OK and your IP address is changed, no restart required. You can set IP's from 192.168.x.x where x ranges from 0-255 except the used IP's such as router and your lan friend's IP.

2. UPnP Devices::

For this first check internet connection by going to start->My Network Places, on the top right pane called Network tasks click the last option called Show icons for networked UPnP devices. Click yes on the dialogue box and now the windows component install takes place. After completion you will see ADSL Router icon when connected. If there's no connection between your computer and router then this device may not show.

Now go to view network connections, there's also one extra item besides local area connection named internet connection. When connected it'll show as connected and when not disconnected it'll show as disconnected. To make it easier right click internet connection properties and select Show icon in notification area when connected. This will add icon on taskbar which notifies you of internet connection.

3. Ping :

Alternatively, you can see if there's net or not by starting command prompt (start->run->cmd) and typing ping www.google.com. If there's ping reply then there's net else the request time outs then there's no net.

4. Default Gateway:

Go to your Modem/CPE web interface (eg.192.168.1.1), enter username (admin) and password for router, you are generally presented with router status something like below:

Main thing to notice here is the Default Gateway. If the Default Gateway is blank or Primary and Secondary DNS Server shows 192.168.1.1 then you should know there's no net connection.

Sometimes the Modem/CPE just needs a reboot/restart to work. Usually there's the option to save and reboot in the modem web interface (search it) or you can turn off and on the router and the restart takes about two minutes.

Still there's no internet connection while the pulse (dsl or link or data) is continuously glowing then reset the router to default setting through modem web interface or manually reset by pinning a pointed object at the back of the router which has a switch in a hole called reset. Again configure the router and restart. If this doesn't solve the problem then call the following NT numbers:

This opens the group policy editor. Then go to:

Local Computer Policy-->Computer Configuration-->Administrative Templates-->Network-->QOS Packet Scheduler-->Limit Reservable Bandwidth

Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab :

"By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default."

So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO.

This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.

I have tested on XP Pro, and 2000
other o/s not tested.

Getting ActiveX contents on Mozilla, Firefox or Opera !!!!

Although Internet Explorer holds a majority of the browser market for ActiveX websites this plug-in provides flexibility of running any choice of browser. Most of the site is accessible from any browser that supports basic style sheets. Users of Mozilla, Firefox, or Opera should be able to read our pages fine, and should also be able to load previous test results or view results that are sent to them through our TechExpress feature.

Until recently, Internet Explorer has been required for any tests performed on the site. Our tests use ActiveX technology, which has only been supported on Internet Explorer. However, Meadco makes a plug-in called Neptune that can be used to run ActiveX controls from non-IE browsers, including Mozilla or Opera. This can let most non-IE browsers run the tests.

There are a few things you should know about Neptune. It is a free download available from http://www.meadroid.com/neptune/. MeadCo does require you do provide a name and email address before downloading the file. In addition, the installation process is not simple for most browsers, you must find and move the plug-in to its correct location.

If you want to give it a try, download this and copy it to the browser's /plugins folder or follow the long procedure below on how to install Neptune:

1. Go to the the MeadCo site, where you will need to fill out a form and accept their license i.e. http://www.meadroid.com/neptune/

2. Carefully note the instructions at the MeadCo site for installing the plugin. The process is not automatic for most browsers, and you will need to perform some manual steps to install the plug-in.

3. For Mozilla and Firefox, after you download the Neptune file you can proceed one one of two ways. If you have WinZip, you can open the .exe file download with WinZip and extract the npmeadax.dll file to the browser's /plugins folder. Otherwise, run the .exe file, search for npmeadax.dll and move it to the browser's /plugins folder.
